I recently moved into my new home and let me just say- moving out of one place and into another can be a pretty daunting an overwhelming task. Here are some of my best tips that can help- especially if you’re not using professional movers.
PS: here’s a first night checklist that you can use- because trust me, you’ll need to keep these things easily accessible because you never know what you might need.
First and foremost, resist the urge to procrastinate. Begin by creating a detailed moving plan at least a few weeks in advance. This will help you stay organized and curb the feelings of overwhelm that are sure to come up. I used a planner and I assigned a section of my apartment to pack up to a specific day. eg. Monday- pantry; Tuesday-dishes; Wednesday- pots & pans. Instead of thinking about tackling the entire room ie. KITCHEN, breaking it up into smaller chunks was so much more manageable.
Next, declutter your home. Go through each room and decide what items you truly need and what can be donated, thrifted or discarded. This will ensure that you keep things that are intentional and that “spark joy“. The last thing you want is to bring clutter from one place, into a next.
Invest in quality packing supplies. Sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and strong tape can make a world of difference in protecting your belongings during the move. Label each box clearly and to the side-which will make unpacking much easier.
Consider creating a First Night Essentials box. This should contain items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, and basic kitchen supplies.
If possible, enlist the help of friends or family- have a packing party! Extra hands can make the process quicker and less daunting.
Lastly, stay positive and patient. Moving can be an overwhelming experience, but it’s also a new beginning, full of opportunities. Embrace the change, and soon you’ll be comfortably settled into your new home.
